More than 150,000 small investors have forgotten about $140 million in dividends - and up to $1 billion worth of shares. If this could be you, these guidelines may help you to find out how you can go about tracing your lost shares and dividends.
1. Contact the relevant company;
2. Contact the responsible state government department - the details are below - as the unclaimed monies may be either registered with that department or depending on the time that has lapsed, held by the department.
IMPORTANT - if you discover you have lost shares, make sure you contact the company and provide your new details.
Many people received AMP shares following the demutualisation in 1997 and may not realise they are even shareholders. To check to see if you are a shareholder are have money owing to you, refer to the AMP website Lost AMP shareholding page and search using your surname and date of birth.
If you think you may be a shareholder in another company, contact that company directly or its share registry. Many of the larger companies in Australia use the share registry services of two firms, Computershare or Link Market Services, details below:

You can check online to see whether NSW Office of State Revenue holds any lost moneys for you. You can also claim online or by telephone and will be required to provide proof of identity.

HOW TO FIND LOST/ UNCLAIMED TAKEOVER PAYMENTS (ASIC website)
If you think you held shares in a company which has been taken over by another company and you have not been paid for those shares, then the monies may be held by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission. You can search for unclaimed moneys on the ASIC website.
